Description

SU 64 SW PRESTON CANDOVER & NUTLEY BASINGSTOKE ROAD
19/6 (B3046, north)

Lower Axford Farmhouse

II

C16, C17, C20. A timber-framed house of several periods, with a modern extension along
the west side. Massive old tile roof, 1/2-hipped at the south end, with a sloping ridge
to the north ending in a 1/2-hip, a tile-hung gable and a roof extending to a low eaves
above an outshot. Exposed timber-framing with altered structure; at the north side is
the moulded beam of a jetty, and below it a bay window on brackets with a moulded
cornice, the walling in this area having close studding and some flint infilling. The
gables are massive frames with arch-bracing, heavy horizontals, and closely-arranged
verticals. The long (east) elevation has old and new sections, suggesting former
recesses now brought to the main face. There is a small section of C18 framing between
the old block and the recent work. Casements. Six-panelled door in a solid frame,
beneath a hood on brackets.
