Conservatory: vine houses with retaining walls to associated root beds; and
garden houses, now house. 2 1/2 C19 and c.1900; restored and garden houses
converted 1980s. Conservatory for J Taylor, possibly designed by Fairfax B
Wade; this and the vine houses constructed by Messenger and Company (of
Loughborough). Red brick in Flemish bond; vine houses and conservatory wood and
iron framed with glass walls and roofs, part of the conservatory roof with
replacement polycarbonate panels; garden houses with artificial slate roofs. On
south side of spine wall are the glasshouses comprising 3 sections of lean-to
vine houses flanking the conservatory (1 section to left, 2 to right, that to
extreme right formerly occupying the position of the palm house); in front of
the vine houses are root beds; to rear of spine wall are garden houses, that at
west end in original condition, the rest now converted to house. Main (south)
elevation: conservatory: 3 x 3 bays; brick plinth; small-pane glazing; central
2/3-glazed double door flanked by centre-pivoting windows, all in round-arched
architraves with radial glazing bars to fanlights; wood cornice; pediment over-
entrance; curved roof having hipped-roofed clerestorey with decorative
weather-vane; returns each have windows as before to 2 front bays, the rear bays
masked by the vine houses. Vine houses: brick plinths with blocked arched
openings (for roots to grow through); small-pane glazing; doors in returns.
Root beds have low retaining walls with chamfered tile coping. Rear: right-hand
garden house has 4-panel door and 2 old small-pane windows; rest of range has
late C20 doors and small-pane windows, roof heightened, and left-hand section
extended forward slightly. Interior: conservatory has elegant frame with 4
columns at centre supporting clerestory and having decorative capitals and open-
work arch braces; fretted main roof ribs with radial quadrant braces; original
door and window fittings; slate shelf on decorative iron bench with front grille
against rear wall (those formerly against other walls removed), and above it,
fruit supports. In the vine houses, similar radial quadrant braces to main roof
ribs; funicular ventilating system; metal floor grille to passage. The window
and ventilation-opening systems are in good working order throughout. The
conservatory is an elegant example and an unusual survival.
