The description shall be amended to read:-

Workhouse; now a college. Dated 1836; extended circa mid C19. Flemish bond red brick
and stucco. Welsh slate roof with gabled ends. Brick stacks.
PLAN: Front range containing boardroom and master's house; attached to the rear are
ward wings, cruciform on plan radiating from a central hub that served as an observation
post overlooking the exercise and drying yards between the wings. To the north and south
large circa mid C19 wings flank the front range. Classical style.
EXTERIOR: 2 storey 3:3:3 bay front, the centre bay advanced and with pedimental gable
containing panel dated 1836; rusticated stucco ground floor, the horizontal joints turned as
voussoirs to the round-arch ground floor windows and central doorway; flush-panel door
and fanlight with radiating glazing bars; sash windows with glazing bars, radiating bars to
ground floor arches; flat rubbed brick arches and cill band to first floor windows. Low
single-storey links to tall circa mid C19 2-storey flanking wings with projecting 3-bay
fronts with pedimental gables with oculus ventilators, stringcourse, 7-window sides and
large 12-pane sashes and cambered brick arches. At the rear, 3-storey wings radiate from
central polygonal hub which contribute to interest of plan but have been heavily altered
architecturally; the linking wing from the front range is 2-storeys; sash windows with
glazing bars, many replaced by casements, sashes to central hub largely intact.

1836. Symmetrical facade (east) of 2 storeys, 3.3.3 windows. Slate roof, with a
pediment/gable above the slightly-projecting centrepiece. Red brick walling to the
upper part, in Flemish bond and with rubbed flat arches, and eaves fascia (following
the gable); a panel in the gable carries the date 1836. Stucco lower walling, with
first floor band, rusticated pattern with arched openings, the horizontal joints being
turned as voissoirs, plinth. Sashes in reveals, with radiating glazing bars within
the arches of the ground floor. Plain doorway with radiating fanlight and 4-panelled
door.
Note: the symmetrical design is continued in the mid C19 larger extensions, of similar
treatment.
