Summary

Milestone, set into the wall of Menherion House, at Wendron, Cornwall.

Description

A stone milestone, dating from the early C19, set into the later garden wall of Menherion House, on the west side of the road, to the north of Gwealeath. The front of the milestone is about 0.95m high, with a shallow arched top. The inscription, in upper-case serif letters, reads: 'REDRUTH / 3 ¼ / CARN / MENELLIS / 1 / HELSTON / 7 ½'; the lettering is picked out in black paint.

History

The milestone is set into the garden wall of Menherion House on an unclassified road which branches eastwards from and rejoins the B3297 Helston to Redruth Road; the milestone is understood to predate both the house and the wall. The milestone does not appear on the Ordnance Survey map published in 1880, but is marked on the map published in 1907. There are six other milestones on this road, though these do not make a consistent set; the others are of a different design, and carry benchmarks, which this one does not. It is possible that the road was intended as a turnpike, and that milestones were set up, but that the route was in fact never turnpiked, and was not adopted as a main road by Cornwall County Council.

Reasons for Listing

The milestone in the garden wall of Menherion House is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* DATE: as an early C19 milestone
* DESIGN: for its lettering, which is of good quality
* GROUP VALUE: as part of a non-uniform series of seven milestones, five of which are listed
