Description

DESCRIPTION: the memorial has a stepped three-stage square base. The upper stage has text in relief lead lettering saying ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / ALL IN SOUTH REDDISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918. Above is a tall, battered pillar, with the names of the men and their regiments recorded in lead lettering on the four faces. It is surmounted by an entablature with PRO PATRIA in relief lettering on the frieze. This supports a Celtic cross rising from a rocky base with a relief-carved wreath to each face. The cross has relief rosettes at its centre and on each arm, with ropework carving on the circular element.

History

The war memorial was erected by public subscription to commemorate the soldiers of South Reddish who died in World War I. The men listed are from a number of different regiments including the local 2nd Manchester Regiment, 1st Cheshire Regiment, various Lancashire regiments, as well as men from a number of Welsh and Scottish regiments, and even a soldier from the Australian Infantry, reflecting the diverse community of the area.

Reasons for Listing

South Reddish War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic Interest: as a poignant reminder of the tragic impact of world events upon an individual community, commemorating the men from the parish of South Reddish who lost their lives fighting in the First World War;
* Design: a well-designed stone memorial incorporating a Celtic cross.
