Description

A War Memorial, commemorating those who fell and those who served in the First World War. Sculpted by Farmer and Brindley. The square plinth is of Grinshill stone and the cross and tapered octagonal shaft are of Portland stone. The shaft has a moulded band to its top and bottom and the square base of the shaft is of Grinshill stone and connects to the plinth which is also square.
The principal front faces north and the cross takes the form of a crucifix with the figure of Christ set below the scroll lettered ‘INRI’. The plinth on this side bears the lettering: ‘GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS’. Below are the names of the nine who fell, and below them is inscribed ‘JESU MERCY’. To the east and west faces is the lettering ‘THESE FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918’ with names listed below. On the south side are listed the names of the men who joined up but did not see active service.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial was at Little Ness, Shropshire, which appears to date from the 1920s.

Reasons for Listing

Little Ness War Memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: it is a poignant reminder of the impact of tragic world events upon an individual community and, thus, has strong cultural and historical significance within both a local and national context;
* Architectural interest: as an accomplished and well-realised war memorial which takes the simple form of the Celtic, wheel-head cross.
