Milestone. Circa early C19. Painted stone with cast-iron plate. Small stone with rounded head. Cast-iron rectangular plate inscribed: London 53, Andover 11. Another plate on the opposite side is missing. The Andover and Basingstoke turnpike was opened in 1754 and this is one of a series of milestone on the turnpike.
A good example of a circa early C19 milestone with an inscribed cast-iron plate.
