Large house, formerly the Rectory. Early C18, with mid C19 alterations and
service wing. Brick walls and slate roof. The main block has a symmetrical
front (north-west) of 2 storeys and attic, 2.1.2 windows. The former double
pile roof was replaced by a single mansard of slate, with 2 small flat roofed
dormers (with sashes); fully moulded eaves cornice, raised in the centre as a
pediment, containing a painted lunette. Flemish bond brickwork with rubbed flat
arches, 1st floor band, plinth, and marks indicating the removal of stucco
pilasters forming the central feature (i.e. supporting the pediment). Victorian
sashes, 2 narrow lights flank the entrance. Victorian doorcase with cornice
on large brackets and plain pilasters, enclosing the C18 arched opening,
containing a radiating fanlight and a 6-flush panelled door. The lower service
wing extends on the north side, of 2 storeys, 4 windows; low pitched hipped slate
(double pile) roof, with coupled eaves brackets, Flemish bond brick walls with
cambered openings, sashes in reveals, and ½ glazed door. The rear elevation is
almost identical, but without the pediment and having a lower central (staircase)
window above the Victorian classical doorcase; the wing is less regular of 3
windows. Inside, there is much original work; the entrance hall has an archway,
and at its rear a fine staircase with dado panelling. Most doorways have
architraves and panelled doors, and there are several chimney pieces.
