Large house, of several periods. Mid C16, with extension of c1700 and c1800.
Brick walls, and tiled roof. A substantial timber-framed Tudor structure,
with later cladding, was extended at the south side c1700, and further extended
eastwards c1800 (forming an L-shaped block) to produce, with refronting of the
west side a long south elevation. Regular south elevation of 2 storeys,
1.3.1.2.1 windows. ½-hipped roof. Red brickwork in header bond, deep parapet
with coping, recessed panels above most openings, plain plastered bond, rubbed
flat arches, stone cills, plinth. Sashes in reveals, with wide French windows
to the 4th and 8th bay. The west elevation, of 2 storeys and attic, has at
its south side 2 massive gables, 1/2-hipped and tile-hung, with brickwork in
English bond, plain pilasters to sides and centre (the latter to ground floor
only), deep 1st floor band with quatrefoil recessed pattern, some rubbed flat
arches, plinth, and indications of altered fenestration. This section has
casements, and 2 sashes in reveals, and a C2O gabled porch with re-used timber
for its frame. The north side (of the west elevation) has tile-hung upper walls,
jettied above a moulded bressumer, and lower walls of English bond, casements
(some with mullions and transoms), and a projecting wing at its north side, which
on its north side has close studded exposed framing with herring-bone infill.
This wing extends further forward as a single-storeyed block, with walls of
brick and stone. The rear (east) shows gables of unequal projections, with tile
hung walls and casements at the north side, a ½-hipped roof to the unit in the
angle, which has brick walling and a tall arched staircase window, the southern
unit (the east part of the south front) having malmstone ashlar walls with brick
dressings and sash windows, The interior has a staircase (c1700) and a large
Tudor brick fireplace.
