Description

SU 74 SE BINSTED MILL COURT

4/62 Barn 30 metres south of
Mill Court.
Formerly listed as the
Tithe Barn at Mill Court.
31/07/63
GV II

Barn. Early C17. Malmstone walls and tile roof. Rectangular barn of 4 bays,
with a dwelling (disused) attached to its west end. The barn has thick walls
with deep chamfered ventilation slots: the roof framework has tie-beams with
splayed struts, on the south side being brought to a lower eaves above a timber-
framed verandah: there is a central wagon entrance with a projected hipped roof.
The house part has a symmetrical front (south) of 2-storeys and attic, 2 windows:
the triple lights have chamfered mullions and frames, with hoodmoulds, the attic
being set in a gabled upper wall: the doorway (a restoration) is in Tudor form
under a hoodmould. Massive timber framework supports the interior, but part of
the flooring (and the upper staircase flight) are missing. The north side repeats
the design, without the verandah and with the lower openings to the house part
filled.
