SU 74 SE BINSTED THE STREET

House, once the parish workhouse. C15, C17, early C19, with minor C20 extensions.
Mixed walling, and a tile roof. Late-medieval timber framed house, with a C17
timber-framed rear wing, and northward extension of the early C19, and minor
additions to south and rear of the C20. Long front (east) of 2 storeys and
attic, 4 windows, with a single-storeyed south side of 1 window. ½-hipped roof,
with 2 high flat-roofed dormers, brick dentil eaves to the north side, and a
lower hipped section linking to the south wing. Exposed frame to the ground floor
with tile-hung upper walls, the north side being of brickwork in Monk bond above
lower walling of malmstone (with brick dressings), the south wing of brickwork in
Flemish Garden Wall bond. Casements, all of different age, size and form.
Boarded door in a plain frame, with a thin hood on carved brackets. The rear wing
has exposed framing on its north side, the upper walls being tile hung. There are
projections and alterations (to form the several units of the former cottages).
