The structure is of Portland stone with neo-classical detailing, and takes the form of a tripartite seat with bold scrolled arm rests and ends. It is curved on plan, comprising three segmental curves. The high back bears a frieze with a series of inset slate panels inscribed with the names of the Fallen; these were installed in 1994 to replace the stolen bronze originals. The raised central section has a plaque inscribed: TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF / MEN OF BEDFORD PARK / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE SERVICE OF / THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918; above is a Doric frieze and cornice.

History

The war memorial commemorates the 44 men of Bedford Park who fell in the Great War 1914-18. It was paid for by public subscription. The date of its unveiling is unclear; the original design for a memorial seat, which would "form a resting place, and also remind them of the resting place to which their dear ones had gone" was agreed at a public meeting in October 1917 (Chiswick Times, 12 October 1917), but this was subsequently modified. It originally stood at the junction of Bath Road and Woodstock Road, and was moved to its present position in 1994.

The Chiswick-born architect and landscape designer Henry Benjamin Inigo Triggs (1876-1923), who studied at Chiswick School of Art in Bedford Park, designed a number of war memorials of distinctive character.

Reasons for Listing

Bedford Park war memorial is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Architectural interest: a distinctive memorial in the uncommon form of an outdoor seat, designed by Inigo Triggs, a notable architect and landscape designer of the early C20;
* Group value: with the Church of St Michael and All Angels, listed Grade II*;
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20.
