SU 73 NW FARRINGDON CHURCH ROAD
2/41 Cruck Cottage
Cottage. C15, C17, with C20 restoration. The framework is exposed in parts
with brick infill, other walling being of brickwork in, Flemish bond. Thatched
roof with 3 gables to the front (enclosing attic windows) and 5 eyebrow dormers
at the rear with tiled aprons). A late-medieval cruck-built hall of 3 bays,
with inserted fireplace and lst floor to the former central hall, and further
timber-framed extensions at each end. 1 storey and attic, the front (north-west)
having 3 windows, and the rear 5 above 6 windows. Casements. Boarded door in
a plain frame. Interior: the framework is remarkably exposed, with braces,
purlins and ridge-piece, the upper rooms being open to the underside of the roof.
The end walls of this long and low building have brickwork of English bond,
and some tile-hanging to the east gable.
