SU 73 NW (Lower Farringdon)

2/31 The Old Barn


Cottage. C16,C17, and early C19. Rendered walls, boarded outshots and south wing.
Thatched roof, hipped and brought to a lower eaves at each end and to form an open
porch on posts, eyebrow dormers; shafted stack. A late medieval 3-bay timber-
framed house, with larger middle bay (former open hall) containing the inserted
chimney, lst floor, and lobby entrance with rear staircase, with timber-framed
outshots at each end,and early C19 cladding. West front: 1 storey and attic; 3
windows. Casements. Plain doorway. The rear elevation has exposed framing and a
small C20 outshot of brick and tile. Inside, the phases of construction are
clearly shown.
