First World War memorial, erected in 1922.

MATERIALS: carved from Portland stone.

DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands in the churchyard of the church of St Peter (Grade II*). It comprises a Celtic cross and a tapering shaft with runic carvings including a dove, tree and a whale, representing air, land and sea respectively. It stands on a tall rectangular plinth which has a chamfered collar inscribed with: TO THE/ GLORY/ OF GOD. Below this is an inscription in black painted lettering which reads: A THANK OFFERING/ FOR PEACE/ AND IN/ HONOURED MEMORY/ OF/ THOSE FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918 / (Names)/ RIP. The right return is inscribed: 1939-1945 / (Names).

SUBSIDIARY FEATURE: the memorial is stands within a small remembrance garden that is enclosed by low stone rubble walls and which is not included in the listing.

History

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. One such memorial, paid for by public subscription, was erected in 1922 to commemorate the twenty-one servicemen men from the parish of Frampton Cotterell who lost their lives during this conflict. A further inscription was added after the Second World War. The war memorial was refurbished in 2005 and a new panel, inscribed with the names of the men who died during the First World War, was added to the west face.

Reasons for Listing

Frampton Cotterell War Memorial, which was erected in 1922, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impacts of world events on this community, and the sacrifices it made in the conflicts of the C20
* Design: as a thoughtfully-designed memorial incorporating a Celtic cross;
* Group value: with the church of St Peter (Grade II*) and a number of churchyard monuments (Grade II).
