Description

SU 71 NW CLANFIELD SOUTH LANE, Chalton

6/10 The Priory

II*

Formerly the rectory. A medieval house (priest's house) with later extensions, and
further extensions of the C18 and mid C19. Walls of flint with stone dressings,
other sections of brickwork in Flemish bond, some roughcast, the front being flint-
work with brick quoins, rubbed flat arches, plinth. 1st floor band. Tile roof,
hipped to small dormers. The front, mid C19 but of late C18 style, projects forward
with a flat roof behind a parapet, and has a projecting centre; two storeys, 2.1.2
windows. Sashes. The ground floor of the centre is a porch, with recessed brick-
work opening, niches within, and a half-glazed inner door with flanking lights.
Behind the front is the C18 block of three bays, the north gable of flint with brick
quoins, the south roughcast: there are three dormers. Behind again is a parallel
block, forming a double pile, the north part medieval the south mid C19; the north
gable has flintwork with stone quoins, and above this brickwork, a ground floor
three-light sash beneath a cambered arch, and upper narrow sashes; the south gable
is tile-hung above brickwork in Flemish bond, with a arge three-light sash to the
1st floor, above a rectangular bay with deep casements. The deieval rear wing has a
wide roof with a lower eaves, flint walls with stone quoins, and C19 windows. There
are minor extensions north and south, and the rearmost part of the building abuts
the high flint wall of the adjoining churchyard. Interior: the rear part has stone
framed doorways with Tudor arches, part of a fireplace arch, and another stone-framed
doorway at a high level.
