Public house. Of Art Nouveau style, c1900. Walls of brickwork in Flemish
bond, some thin moulded dressings, part of upper walls slatehung. Tile
roofing. A complex essay in assymmetrical balance, a wide central block of
2 storeys and attic with a gable to the roadway RH with a half-timbered
triangle above and small triple casement, the long slope on one side
(right) counterbalanced by a rounded 1st floor window (of mullioned and
transomed lights) surrounded by a wide curved eaves beneath a tall concave
leaded roof, topped by a wrought-iron fleche. To one side the wing has a
plain 2-storeyed bay beside a recessed arched entrance, in the centre (to
the gable) there is a ground floor bay with a semi-circular centrepiece. To
the other side the faceted elevation to the south wing continues with slate
hanging above a group of windows (and a doorway) enclosed in columns
between the tilted slating and the moulded cills. This feature continues
its angular way round the wing, with four hips, the fenestration being
broken by a projecting brick stack. Behind the elaborate facade to Station
Road the structure divides into varied plainer units, each with its
separate roof form and different roof height, providing service and
(former) stable accommodation, this multi-formed exterior being exposed on
the corner (with High Street), behind a low brick wall with two gateways,
each flanked by gate piers, topped by ball finials above wide stone
cornices. The windows are made up of square leaded lights of unit panes,
one upper group having a central panel containing the title of the hotel,
in lettering of exaggerated tallness.
