6/107 Former stable at
Hale Farm


Stable. c.1800. Timber frame with weatherboard cladding (partly tarred), on
plinth of red brick in English bond; replacement Welsh slate roof. One storey
with hayloft over; 5 bays. Wide central doorway, the doors gone; half-hipped
roof; loading hatch to left return. Interior: timber frame complete having
jowled and unjowled wall posts (jowled at corners); narrow panels; long
straight wall braces; chamfered cross-beams supporting loft which has floor of
overlapped boards. Roof has collared principal rafter trusses; staggered butt
purlins; square-section ridge-piece, on yokes at trusses. Ground floor has:
brick pavement; lower part of walls board lined; continuous wooden manger along
rear wall, open to loft (for filling); one stall at left side; pivoting harness
beam to front left corner; and ladder up to loft.
