Folly tower. 1879-1885 for ATT Peterson. Mass concrete built in lifts, the
concrete being rammed into wooden frames. Tower is 66m high, slender,of square
plan, with higher polygonal stair-turret and lantern on top. Of plinth and 3
stages, 10 storey, centre stage larger, between stages moulded string, on each
face of each stage recessed pointed panel, window inside mostly pointed but general
style was intended to be Indian as drum and domes of stair-turret and lantern are.
At ground floor level 2 single storey wings. Peterson wanted to be entombed on
top, with a permanent strong light, this was not allowed. Landmark in tradition
of C18 "follies", and remarkably early example of concrete construction.
