5.12.55 Bramdean House

Small country house. Circa 1740, extended c1820, remodelled c1900. Blue brick
front with red brick dressings, old plain tile roof. 5 by 2 bay mid C18 house,
with 2 similar bays, slightly set back added to left and lower 3 bay wide by 4
deep wing added to right in early C19, and to rear of left bays service wing
added c1900. Front, central 5 bay block 2 storey and attic on raised basement,
with 2 similar bays to left, and to right 3 bay, 1½ storey on basement, wing.
Central, doorway approached by curving flight of stone steps with wrought iron
balustrades of c1900 6-panel central door with arched fanlight, under heavy wide
curved hood on large carved scroll brackets. Original block and left bays have
on both floors C18 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars in rubbed brick arches.
1st floor string course and moulded dentilled cornice, with short parapet and
stone coping. Right wing has tall 15-pane sashes with rubbed brick heads at level
of string course to left. Above tall panelled parapet. On roof of central block
3 flat roofed dormers of 2-light casements. Roof hipped with lead ridges.
Symmetrical stacks to central block behind ridge and stack on left end wall.
Interior has late C18 features but largely remodelled c1900 with heavy Jacobean
style panelling in left ground floor rooms and right wing made into one room.
