Manorial farmhouse. C15 hall house, c1600 wing, C18 and C19 remodellings.
Timber-frame with plaster, rubble flint infill, part rebuilt or encased in brick,
all rendered, old plain tiled roof. Late medieval hall house with taller large
cross-wing with staircase tower, added c1600. All re-fronted C18. Where they
join bays of hall and cross-wing rebuilt and extended after C19 fire. Front
is now side of crosswing, 2 storey and attic, 2 bay with central narrow bay for
large stack (and stair tower on other side) and at right earlier hall house,
1½ storey, projecting froward 2 bays, with another 2 behind. C19 gabled rendered
porch in 3 centred porch in 3 centred arch with fanlight above 3-panelled top-lit
door. Either side C19 16-pane flush framed sash. On 1st floor 3 wide 12-pane
flush frame sashes. Side of projection has a C19 1 or 2 light casement on each
floor and blank end bay with large stack containing bread oven and smoking room
above. Left gable end has exposed close studded timber-framing and original
and replica ovolo mullioned windows on each floor; 7-light high on ground floor,
2 3-lights either side on 1st floor and 5-light in attic, which is jettied on
moulded bressemer. Roof half-hipped, with boxed eaves and 2-light hipped dormer
to right bay. Stack large square base with 4 diamond stacks. Inside medieval wing
remains of smoke blackened crown post roof and heavy reused timbers to 1st floors.
Cross wing substantially still c1600. Panelled ground and 1st floor parlours at
left end, with arabesque inlay to ground floor cornice and moulded 1st floor
cornice. Complete 4-newel-post staircase in tower with moulded door surrounds to
rooms off landing. Original 3-centred chamfered brick fireplaces in rooms either
side of stack. Attic room has original door and queen post roof with butt purlins,
cross braces to collars and straight wind braces.
