SU 53 W ITCHEN VALLEY

7/23 Barn.20 m. NW of
Avington Farm Cottages

GV II

Barn. C16. Timber-frame with ends weatherboarded but side walls of brick,
old plain tile roof. 5 bay aisled barn with hip bay added to end C18. Each
side in central bay hipped projecting porch, that to front rebuilt on brick
wall with small door replacing double doors. Double doors at ends. Roof
half-hipped to left and slightly so to right. Inside queen strut roof with
short struts to lower purlin which has straight braces upwards to rafter and
collar at level of higher purlin. Curved struts from posts to aisle plate
and tie. Aisle tie from posts to top of wall with strut from this
to support purlin of lower roof. Some medieval style ridge tiles with combs.
