Middle-sized country house. 1851-61 by H Woodyer for Capt. Corbet-Shipley.
Flint with brick and stone dressings, old plain tile roofs. Double pile,
2 storey, 7 window range house, with on right end service courtyard of 2 walls
from each corner of house running to corner of servants' cottages. Entrance
front has projecting crosswing at left end with inscription band in stone at
1st floor level and 3-light trefoiled window with transom, stone crest above
and hood mould over. On its right side staircase tower with tall 1st floor
2-light cinquefoiled window with transom and 3rd stage of close studded timber-
frame, with each stud supported on corbel, 4 pointed lights on each side, and
hipped roof. To right of tower and against it single storey gabled timber
porch with pointed door with 5-light square headed window with transom, above
the 1st floor moulded brick string which steps up right of bay over 3-light
trefoiled window with transom and over 2-light window with head in gabled
dormer with carved bargeboards. To right of this external stack on front of
wall, then similar windows, and stepped buttress with stack above on edge of
roof. To right wide gabled bay with 2 3-light windows with 2 2-light windows
over. Right bay slightly projecting with angled corner, on 1st floor on this
angle single light window and 2-light to right. In interior unaltered except
for redecoration. Full height hall behind tower, porch and windows to right
with ornate carved gothic staircase and gallery, large hooded stone fireplace.
To right dining room with convex hooded stone fireplace and armorial stained
glass. In right cross-wing large drawing room with ornate fireplace and
fittings, behind hall study with gothic carved oak fireplace and built in
collection cases, shelves and desk.
