Mansion. E-shaped front block of c.1600, extended eastwards in the same style
C18, parallel rear range (at a higher ground level) early C19 (by Nash), raised c1910
to form a similar elevation to the front. Flint walls with brick dressings;
moulded plinth, 1st floor band with cornice moulding on brackets, eaves band with
similar cornice moulding on brackets, plain pilasters to the ground-floor, Ionic
pilasters to the 1st floor, hoodmoulds to attic windows in gables, verge to gable.
The eastern half of the north front (C18) of brickwork in Flemish bond with the
same details, the south elevation has brickwork in Flemish Garden Wall bond with
similar details (but fewer pilasters). Tile roof, double pile (higher at the
rear), with five main gables to the front and five (with some spacing) to the
rear. The north front elevation has five gables (two C18 three of the 1st period),
the fourth recessed and the fifth brought forward: each gable contains an
attic window, with two windows on the ground and 1st floors separated by pilasters
(Ionic above plain); the fourth gable has three divisions of which the eastern
one is masked by a projecting two-storeyed gabled porch. Mullioned and transomed
windows, replaced by sashes in the easternmost bay. The doorway is a Tudor arch
beneath a hoodmould. This form of elevation is repeated on the west side as two
gables and a porch, and beyond at the south side a large projection (the west end
of the rear elevation). The wider rear elevation has five unequal gables, and
extensions at each side, splayed (3-light) two-storeyed bays beneath the outer-
most gables, sashes to the ground-floor (originally a single-storeyed elevation
of the early C19) with mullioned end transomed windows to the 1st floor.
