Description

SU 61 SW HAMBLEDON
10/24 Well House 2 metres north
of Bury Lodge
GV II
Wellhead, and apparatus for raising (barrels of) water. Early C19. A square
brick pavilion with arched openings in the centre of each side (the south-west
corner being chamfered). In the centre of the brick floor is a boarded hatch.
Within the structure there is timber framework which supports the mechanism,
comprising a high-level axle (with rope) connected to a wheel with dowel cogs set
between wide flanges. In line with this wheel, and connected to a separate frame-
work, is a smaller 'cogged' wheel linked by an axle to a lightly-framed large
wheel having fixed near its rim a wrought-iron handle, and controlled by a long
brake lever. At the other side there is a lead-lined trough with an indented side
(to accommodate the tipped water barrel), the trough slopes and narrows, to pass
through a hole in the east wall. The alignment of the 'cogged' wheels suggest
that an intermediate gear wheel is missing, or that there was some form of belt
drive between them.
