7/47 Soberton House
House. C18, with early C19 extensions and alterations in Regency style. Walls of
painted brickwork in English bond, with stucco to the Regency part, tile-hanging
at the south elevation. Tile roof, hips at the rear. L-shaped building, with
later extension to north and rear: the stuccoed west front elevation is symmetrical,
of two storeys and attic, and three widely-spaced windows, with a set back north
extension without features. Sashes, triple to the ground-floor the porch is off-
centre, of a slender and exaggerated Greek Doric Order, of two pilasters and two
columns (fluted in the upper 2/3), with a wide doorway, having coupled half-
glazed doors with narrow side panes. The rear (also stuccoed) shows the north side
as symmetrical with two above one window, the ground-floor light being a large
triple sash reaching to floor level: the other part of the elevation swells out-
ward, with an arched staircase window and to the south side the higher remains of
a C18 staircase wing, with two levels of hipped roofing of narrow span: a rear
doorway with a simple canopy on posts and half-glazed door. The remaining elevations
are vernacular in character and detail. Inside, there is a fine curving staircase.
