3/157 Baytree House
Farmhouse, now house. Probably C17 enlargement of C16 house, with mid-
C19 and mid-C20 alterations and additions. Timber-framed with painted
brick and rendered infill, sandstone rubble plinth, plain tile roof,
external brick stack with offsets at rear of centre, also external brick
stack at left gable end. U-shaped plan; main range of four framed bays,
including former through-passage bay; framed bay at rear right end and
rebuilt brick bay at rear left end; single storey, attic with dormers and
cellar. Framing: three square panels from sill to wall-plate, short
straight braces in upper corners and tie-beam trusses with two collars
and queen struts, and V-struts in apex. Front elevation: three gabled
dormers and four windows on ground floor; two 3-light and two 2-light
casements with plank weatherings, three gabled dormers with 2-light
casements; previous entrance in narrow bay, second from left, now blocked
and having an inserted 2-light casement; present main entrance in left
side elevation of rear brick bay through a C20 door. Interior: main
beam stop-chamfered; large sandstone inglenook in 'hall' bay. The rear
timber-framed bay has irregular framing and is two storeys and attic
and of possible earlier date.
