2/25 Houghtonspole Farmhouse
Farmhouse. c1600, altered mid- to late C19. Part timber-framed with brick
infill and replacement walling on sandstone rubble plinth, part brick; plain
tiled roofs. Hall and cross-wing plan; hall part aligned north/south and of
two bays, partly rebuilt C19 with upper bay occupied by large chimney with
brick ridge stack; cross-wing of two framed bays at north gable end. Two
storeys and cellar beneath cross-wing. Framing: cross-wing of four rows of
panels from sill to wall-plate; long straight braces in lower corners of
both floors; collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars, three struts to
lower and two to upper collar. East front elevation: hall part has a C19
lean-to addition to the upper bay with a 2-light casement; cross-wing gable
end has a 2-light casement on both floors and a central doorway with moulded
architrave and no door. Attic light in south gable end. Interior: large
back-to-back fireplaces, one facing south has range and bread oven; winder
staircase in cross-wing; south-west part of hall used as dairy. Entrance to
cellar in north elevation. External chimney to rear cross-wing gable end.
