Farmhouse. Late C16 with mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations and additions.
Part timber-framed with brick infill, refacing, replacement walling and
additions, part rubble; plain tiled roofs. Hall and cross-wing plan;
main part of six bays aligned north-east/south-west with large truncated
external rubble chimney to north-west elevation, the brick stacks now
replaced by a pitched roof; two-bay cross-wing at north-east gable end
with external brick chimney to side elevation. Two storeys and attic.
Framing: north-west elevation has two rows of panels at first floor level
of former hall and of cross-wing with some herringbone struts; cross-wing
gable end has a collar and tie-beam truss with three collars, four struts
survive to lower collar, two to central collar and the two to upper collar
are retained. North-west front elevation: hall of main part has lean-to,
partly hipped roofed addition enclosing base of external lateral chimney;
the addition has a 3-light casement in its front elevation and a 2-light
casement in the left side; to the right of the chimney is a 2-light first
floor casement and, beneath, the main entrance which has a lean-to glazed
porch and half-glazed door. The bays to the right of the entrance are used
partly as outbuildings and there is a C19 addition adjacent to the entrance,
T-plan and of two levels with a door and 2-light first floor casement in
the angle with the hall. Cross-wing gable end has a 2-light ground floor
and 3-light first floor casement and a large attic light. Interior:
recorded as having moulded ceiling beams, a large stone fireplace in the
hall and C17 oak panelling in the room above. South-east elevation has
been completely refaced. C19 brick two-bay addition to north-east side
elevation, of two levels with large garage door and, above, a 2-light window
and loft door. The building is prominently situated on an elevated and
ancient site. (VCH 4, p 265). Not inspected.
