Farmhouse. C17 or earlier, remodelled c1860. Brick with plain tiled
roofs, large external side stacks and main ridge stack. U-plan; two
storeys, attic with half-dormers and cellar; pierced scalloped barge-
boards; 1:2:1 bays; outer bays break forward slightly, are gabled and
have giant clasping pilasters and coved capitals decorated with plaster
hop garlands; above the capitals at the base of each bargeboard is a
small semi-circular niche. Windows all have rusticated voussoirs with
large moulded keyblocks. Central bays have a ground floor 16-pane sash,
two first floor 12-pane sashes and two gabled half-dormers with 9-pane
sashes; the roof between the half-dormers is supported on a coved corbel
enriched with a plaster garland; main entrance to left has engaged Doric
columns, an open pediment on large festooned consoles, a C19 panelled door
with moulded architrave, plain fanlight and plaster decoration in spandrels.
Left outer bay has a ground floor tripartite window with central 8-pane sash,
a first floor 16-pane sash and a 9-pane attic light. Right outer bay has a
ground and first floor tripartite window similar to those in the left outer
bay. Interior: central hall has richly moulded coffered C19 ceiling and
dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and large turned newels. Room to
front right has ornate C19 ceiling mouldings with painted foliated frieze,
concave lozenge and square panels and a large foilated ceiling rose. Original
moulded ceiling beams evident to rear left of house. A drawing showing the
house before its C19 remodelling was in possession of the owner at the time
of resurvey (April 1985).
