2/14 Henry Hewes Almshouse

11.6.59 The Almshouse)


House. Early C17, restored mid-C20. Timber-frame with brick infill on
coursed rubble plinth and with tile roof. Two framed bays aligned north/
south with central stack and side lobby entry. South (street) gable: one
storey with 2-light casement in gable lighting attic. Attic also has a
flat-roofed dormer in west side. Tie-beam and attic floor jettied with a
square oriel to ground floor. Framing: three square panels high with straight
angle braces and tension braces. Jettied beams both moulded and dentilled.
They also have carved brackets below. (RCHM 3, p 12, no 11).
