Range of monastic buildings of Wigmore Abbey, now house. C12 and C14
with later alterations. Sandstone rubble and ashlar with sandstone dress-
ings. Tiled roofs; sandstone and brick stacks. L-plan with arms extending
to west and south. Two storeys and attics. South elevation consists of
main C14 range with gable of C12, C17 and C19 range to right. Main range
has four gabled dormers with cross-casements. First floor has 3-light C15
traceried window under flat two-centred head to left-hand side. The main
lights have cinquefoiled heads. To its right is a small 2-light casement
and an 8-panelled early C18 door with transom light and pediment on brackets
reached by tallet stairs rising from left. Further to the right between a
pair of C17 weathered buttresses is a pair of C14 trefoiled and ogee-headed
lights with transom. To right of right-hand buttress is a C20 window with two
semi-circular-headed lights. Ground floor has blocked doorway to left contain-
ing a 3-light C20 casement; central restored 2-light mullioned window and less
restored but similar window to the right. At the junction with the southern
range is a porch with hipped roof the corner of which is supported by a shaft,
probably C12, decorated with intersecting lozenges and a foliated capital.
Within the porch is a glazed C20 door. Gable front has two small square
windows to first floor and a 4-light mullioned and transomed ovolo-moulded
window to ground floor. On its right return are two stacks, one with three
moulded brick shafts, the other with two shafts. Interior not inspected.
Wigmore Abbey is a scheduled Ancient Monument, County no 135. (BoE, p 322;
RCHM, Vol III, p 1).
