House. C17 and C18 with earlier origins and later alterations. Brick,
dressed sandstone and squared sandstone rubble. Hipped Welsh slate roof
and brick stacks. Roughly rectangular plan with main front to south.
Cellar and three storeys. South elevation has 2:3:2 windows, glazing bar
sashes under gauged brick heads. Advanced pedimented centre and wooden
eaves cornice. Quoins to corners and corners of advanced centre. Probably
early C20 central entry with glazed door and bracketted stone canopy above
which volutes flank 6-pane window. In front of elevation is a balustrade.
West elevation has balustraded porch, probably late C19, with four C19
Ruscan columns in which is 8-panelled C18 door with side lights and wide
fanlight: Above the porch are two thin stone pilasters rising to eaves.
North elevation has squared sandstone rubble centre part with two tall round-
headed windows. Interior has ex-situ C19 doors, mid-C19 main staircase with
turned balusters. To rear is four-flight c1665 open-well newel staircase in
oak with turned balusters. One principal room on south side has fine modillioned
C18 plaster cornice and contemporary marble fireplace. The Hall is the home of
the descendants of Sir Robert Harley, First Earl of Oxford whose monument is
in the Church of St Barnabas (qv).
