north of Downton Castle

Lodge. Circa 1861. Dressed sandstone and brick. Timber-frame with plaster
infill. Tiled roof and stone stack. L-plan with arms to east and north.
Cellar, one storey and attic. East elevation has gable front with 3-light
casement to attic and canted bay window with two forward-facing lights to
ground floor. Above the attic window is a brattished cambered collar and
a row of three framed quatrefoils. Above the hipped roof of the bay window
is another row of decorated timber-framed panels. The outer panels have
quatrefoils with spurs; the inner ones have quadrant curves to each corner.
Brackets at eaves level have carved wooden eagles. Beneath the brackets
are corner posts with slender attached twisted shafts; Gable finial and
pendant. Attached to left is a porch under a catslide roof which on its
open south side has six panels with ogeed cinquefoiled heads and quatrefoil
tracery. Each panel is divided by an iron bar with fleur-de-lys finial.
Entry from porch into south wall has ledged door. South elevation has
timber-framed oriel supported from corbel set in deep sandstone plinth and
gable decoration in form ofsaltire crosses. Attached to west end is brick
flat-roofed late C20 extension (not of special interest). Interior has
pegged roof trusses with collars supproted by angle struts. Cellar contains
bread oven, copper and stone sink. Attached to south side is parapet of
Bridge (qv) over Stone Brook. Downton Castle (qv) is in Downton CP.
