House, now shop and two houses. Probably C17 with later alterations. Timber-
frame and sandstone rubble with roughcast finish. Welsh slate roof with one
off-ridge brick stack and brick end stack. U-plan of five by two bays with
main front to south. Cellar, two storeys and attic. South elevation in two
parts. No 1 to the left has 1:1 windows, late C20 cross-casements, one in
left gable front below 2-light attic casement. Ground floor has square shop
window, 3-light casement and two entries, both with pedimented canopies and
transom lights, the left are late C20, the right perhaps early C19. No 3 to
the right, has two windows, late C20 glazing bar sashes. Central gabled
dormer with 2-light casement. Entry to left-hand side with glazed late C20
door and pedimented canopy. East elevation has two curved brackets to
slightly jettied upper storey. Interior: No 1 has exposed timber-framed cross-
walls and trusses with queen posts and V-struts: First floor room has late C18
or early C19 cast iron fireplace inscribed COAL BROOK DALE with foliated jambs
and pendants in deeply moulded earlier surround, perhaps late C17. Two similar
fireplace surrounds, one with early C19 cast iron fireplace. One first floor
room has ceiling divided into four panels by beams with lamb's tongue chamfer
stops. Panelled and fielded doors. Principal ground floor room has ceiling
divided into panels by chamfered beams. No 3 has flagged stone floor. Principal
ground floor room to east has fireplace with large oak lintel and chamfered stone
jambs. Cross-wall has two rows of square timber-framed panels to ground floor.
Principal first floor room has three rows of similar panels. Ceiling beams
have straight cut chamfer stops. Trusses have raking struts from ties to
