The Old Toll House

GV
II

Toll house, now house. Early C19, altered mid-C20. Stuccoed sandstone
and machine-tiled roof with overhanging eaves. T-plan; main range aligned
north-west/south-east with central canted wing on south-west elevation and
large external rubble chimney with offsets and rebuilt brick stack adjoining
north-eastern elevation. Single storey with chamfered plinth. South-west front
elevation: two windows in canted wing are situated at angled junction of canted
faces, and faces adjoining main range; both have hoodmoulds with returns and
the north-west window is the C19 multi-paned original whilst the south-east
window has been replaced by a C20 casement. There was probably a doorway in
the central face originally. At the north-west end of the main range is a
C20 casement of two lights, also having a hoodmould with returns. The window
at the south-east end of this range has been replaced by a C20 flat-roofed
bay window. Lean-to brick addition at rear. The building is situated on the
old turnpike road from Gloucester to Leominster and faces the Ketch House and
adjoining stables (qv). Included for group value.
