Farmhouse, now house divided into two dwellings. Early C17, altered and
recorded to have been part rebuilt between 1717 and 1740 for the Mason family,
remodelled circa 1740 probably for John Reece with further mid-C19 alterations
and mid-C20 additions. Timber-framed with rendered infill on sandstone base,
main range is roughcast to south front and sides; slate roofs, main range roof
is hipped. L-plan. Older range of three framed bays aligned north/south.
Main range also of three framed bays aligned east/west and adjoins south end
connected by 6 foot wide linking section. Main roof has large external rough-
cast rubble chimneys with brick stacks at each end. Two storeys. cellar and
attic with dormers. Framing: main range has six rows of square panels from
sill to wall-plate, rear wing has four rows and collar and tie-beam truss with
struts. South front elevation: symmetrical arrangement; two ground floor and
three first floor 12-pane sashes. Two gabled C19 dormers with moulded barge-
boards, tall pendant finials and 2-light casements. Central entrance has a
flat moulded canopy on console brackets, a moulded architrave and a 6-panelled
door (two lower flush panels, four upper glazed panels). It is approached by
a flight of five stone steps with simple cast iron railings. C20 additions in
north-west angle. Interior: ground floor room to west of main range retains its
early to mid-C18 interior. Ceiling has ornate plasterwork and is divided into
six coffers; the walls have raised painted panelling and the fireplace is flanked
by two fluted pilasters and has an eared architrave. The older range incorporates
much re-used timber including two probable former cruck blades in the roof. The
main ceiling beams have ogee stop chamfers, there are straight internal lower
corner braces inserted probably in the early C18, and a variety of carpenter's
marks on the floor boards and ceiling joists as well as the main frame. The.
landing window of the main range had names scratched onto the glass including
the names "Catherine Chamberlain and "Henry". (Brian, Dr A: The Houses of the
