5/31 Broom Cottage

House, formerly occupied by local blacksmith. Circa 1675 with mid-C19 and
mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed with rendered and painted brick infill
on sandstone base, partly roughcast with slate roof. Two plus one framed
bays aligned north-west/south-east [single-bay part situated at end of range
adjoining to south-east known as The Haven (qv)]. Large rubble chimney at
junction of two-bay and single-bay part with three diagonal brick ridge
stacks; main entrance presently faces chimney forming lobby-entry plan.
Also C20 external chimney at north-west end. There is a continuous timber-
framed lean-to outshut at rear. Part two storeys and attic, part single
storey and attic with half-dormers. Framing: four rows of panels from sill
to wall-plate, collar and tie-beam truss with four struts and V-strut in
apex at north-west gable end. South-west front elevation: two-bay part has
C20 casements on both floors, all of two lights. Single-bay part has a 2-
light ground floor casement, a C19 gabled half-dormer with a 2-light casement,
and the main entrance has a gabled C20 timber porch and C20 door. (RCHM Herefs
