6/87 The Birches Farmhouse

Farmhouse. C16, with some early C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed
with brick infill, some of it painted, partly clad in brick, on a coursed
rubble plinth under a hipped slate roof. T-plan, cross-wing aligned north/
south, other range to west. Main stack of rubble to the north gable.
East front of two storeys, jettied to left, faced in brick to right. First
floor has two 4-light casements over a 3-light casement to the left and a
4-light casement to right. Entrance to right of centre has a C19 gabled
tiled porch and a ledged and boarded door. Framing is close-studded with
mid-rail to each floor. Jetty bressummer is chamfered. Rear wing, three
square panels high with straight angle braces. (RCHM, 3, p 196, no 6).
