Workhouse, now housing. 1837. Brick, hipped slate roof. Double H-plan
with central range aligned north-east/south-west. Central block of three
storeys, all the others of two storeys. South-west front of two storeys
and three plus two plus three windows, all 9-pane sashes under rubbed
brick heads. The centre is slightly advanced with a modillioned pediment
above. Band over ground floor which has glazing bar sashes under rubbed
brick heads. Two entrances, one to each corner of advanced centre, have
dentilled stone canopies with doors set in slight recesses, these are
ledged and boarded. This block is flarflced by single-storey ranges and
has diagonal walls with windows in the angles. The-south-west gable
contains a blind lunette window. The rear cross-wing has gable-end stacks
and segmentally headed glazing bar sashes. A well preserved example
of a country workhouse, with very little later alterations. (BoE, p 313).
