Gateway, attached bridge and moat platform retaining wall. Late C16 gateway,
C16 and later retaining wall and C18 bridge. Gateway of dressed sandstone
on outer edge of moat east of Bishopstone Court Farmhouse (qv) consists of
two stone piers, formerly connected by a moulded arch, now demolished. Flank-
ing the arch on each face of the piers are pilasters with moulded bases and
cornices, the latter continued round the piers. The piers were finished with
pyramidal cappings now much eroded. The bridge is C18 of coursed rubble. It
has a single segmental arch and a plain parapet. The retaining wall is of
coursed rubble. The whole is surrounded by a water-filled moat. (RCHM, Vol 3,
