The Tan House

II

House. C15, with early C19 alterations, restored late C20. Timber-frame
with rendered infill on a C20 brick plinth, underbuilt in painted brick
with tile roof. T-plan, cross-wing aligned east/west, with hall range
to north, lateral stack on cross-wing. West front has gabled cross-wing
to right, formerly jettied, two storeys with a 2-light casement over a
3-light casement. Range to left of one storey with attic lit by a gabled
dormer. Ground floor has a single-light casement to left, a 3-light casement
to right. Entrance in angle has a lean-to C20 tiled porch. Framing
three square panels high, much restored. West gable of cross-wing has
curved angle braces to cambered tie-beam and three struts to collar with
trenched purlins. Interior not inspected, but hall range reported to have
a smoke-blackened roof. (RCHM, 3, p 174, no 19).
