Farmhouse. Late C16 or early C17 with later C17 additional wing, further
alterations of early C18, minor C20 alterations. Diagonal and ornamental
herringbone timber-framing with wattle-and-daub and painted brick infill,
sandstone rubble plinth and stacks with brick shafts, main western stack
has decorative shafts. South front refronted with brick, tiled roofs.
Irregular half-H plan with through-passage and later wing added to eastern
end, axial and lateral stacks, main entrance to north front through project-
ing two-storey porch. Two storeys with attics and part cellar. North front:
later wing to left with square panelled timber-framing and.largely refaced
in brick to ground floor; two 2-light and one 3-light casement windows,
one 3-light C20 window to ground floor to right of ledged door. Gable end
of cross-wing to right formerly with jettied upper storey now underbuilt
in brick, one 2-light and one 3-light casement window to upper floor and two
similar casements to ground floor. Central hall range to right has projecting
two-storey gabled porch with jettied upper storey on moulded bressummer, one
2-light casement window to upper floor, inner ledged door, hall to right has
two 2-light casement windws to both floors. Gable end of western cross-wing
to right with former jettied upper storey now underbuilt. One 3-light and
one single-light casement window to upper floor, one 3-light window to ground
floor. Interior retains mid-C17 panelling in a room in the east cross-wing.
The hall has later C17 panelling with a painting over the fireplace of a
house and garden, the south-west room also retains panelling of c1700 with
a hunting scene over the fireplace. Late C17 west staircase has turned
balusters and a moulded handrail. (RCHM, Vol 3, p 66).
