Farmhouse and adjoining cowhouse. Early C17, altered late C17, mid-C19 and
late C20. Timber-framed with painted brick infill on rubble base, weather-
boarded gables and stone-tiled roofs laid in diminishing courses. Hall and
cross-wing plan; hall of one framed bay aligned north-east/south-west with
external rubble chimney and brick stack at north-east end and two-storey
porch wing to south-east front. Cross-wing of two framed bays situated at
south-west end; it has a large external rubble chimney which has three star-
shaped brick stacks with joint capping on its south-west chimney and also an
external rubble chimney with a brick stack at its north-west end. A single-
bay wing was built onto the south-west side of its north-west bay in the late
C17; this wing has a contemporary lean-to outshut at its south-west end with
another lean-to outshut on its north-west side. Two storeys, attic and cellar.
Framing: main part has six rows of square panels from sill to wall-plate, some
long straight braces in lower corners of both floors of porch wing. Gable end
of porch has jettied upper storeys on shaped brackets. Roof trusses mainly con-
cealed and are of collar and tie-beam truss type with struts and raking struts
across lower corners. Late C17 lean-to addition has four rows of square panels
from sill to wall-plate. The cross-wing has stone-tiled pent-roofs at first
floor level; there are timber nesting boxes with two rows of entry holes beneath
the south-east pent-roof. Windows have leaded casements. South-east front
elevation: hall part has a rectangular first floor window. Porch has a first
floor 3-light window with a plank weathering; beneath is a round-headed timber
archway and within a large ledged and battened door with an original moulded
architrave. Cross-wing gable end to left has an original 6-light mullioned-
and-transomed window on both floors, the outer lights of which are now blocked;
the ground floor window projects slightly on an original moulded sill. There is
an attic light with a plank weathering. The late C17 wing to the left has a
ground floor cross-casement and a first floor rectangular light. The lean-to
outshut at the gable end of the wing has a 2-light window on both floors.
There are some original ogee-mouldedmullioned windows to the rear of the main
part. A single-storey service wing adjoins the north-west gable end of the
cross-wing. Interior: some original ceiling beams are exposed. Hall has large
fireplace and original dog-leg staircase with pierced splat balusters, moulded
handrails and square newels with shaped finials. One doorway has an original
moulded frame. The cowhouse adjoins the north-east end of the hall. Early
C17 or possibly medieval. Timber-framed and weatherboarded on rubble base
with stone-tiled roof laid in diminishing courses. Six framed bays with
through-passage bay adjacent to farmhouse. Framing not visible externally.
South-east elevation: there are two 2-light windows with transom lights and
a 6-pane window on the ground floor, an upper level rectangular leaded light
and a loft door, and two ledged and battened doors and a stable door. The
north-west elevation has a continuous lean-to outshut. Interior not inspected,
but recorded to have exposed heavy beams and joists and retain traces of colour
decoration in a chevron design. (RCHM, III, p 23-4, item 3; BoE, p 86).
