Barn, including part of former house, stables and adjoining garden wall.
C16 origins, rebuilt early C18 with mid-C19 and late C20 alterations.
Part handmade brick, part timber-framed and weatherboarded on rubble base;
corrugated asbestos roofs. L-plan; main range incorporating seven-bay barn
and two-bay former house aligned north/south with stable range of roughly
five bays adjoining to south-east. Barn: two south bays are a later addition.
Wagon bays with opposed cart entries and double doors in third and sixth bays
from south end. Wing of two framed bays adjoins centre of west side. Also
single-storey wing adjoining sixth bay from north end. Interior: mainly four
panels from sill to wall-plate (partly altered), collar and tie-beam end trusses
with struts, intermediate tie-beam trusses with two pairs of raking struts and
three tiers of trenched purlins. Some of the'timber is C16 and reused. Former
house adjoins north end. Three bays. Two levels. East elevation has an
original mullioned-and-transomed window, a 4-panelled door with a cambered head
and an inserted double doorway with a timber lintel and C20 metal door. Interior
is much altered but retains large fireplace at rear. Stable: roughly five bays
and two levels. Main north elevation: openings all have cambered heads. There
are four ground floor windows, a loft opening and two stable doors, one having
a transom light with a central glazing bar. A single-storey wing adjoins the
east gable end; this wing has a gable-end parapet with a ball finial at its
east end. Garden wall links the single-storey wing to Eardisley Park (qv)
enclosing the farmyard. Handmade brick with ashlar coping. It is about
10 feet high and 40 yards long. (RCHM, III, p 53, item 4).
