The Cottage
II
House. C17, extended C17 with mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-
framed with painted brick infill on rubble base, some painted rubble walling
and painted brick replacement walling; machine-tiled roof with brick stack
to rear centre of ridge. Two plus two framed bays aligned north/south; two
northernmost bays are original and have an external rubble chimney with tiled
off-sets and a diagonal rubble stack at their north end. Two southernmost
bays are probably an C18 addition and have a smaller external chimney with
a brick stack at their south gable end. Single storey and attic with dormers.
frill original part has two panels from sill to wall-plate. Addition has
three panels from sill to wall-plate and scantling timber. Short straight
upper corner brace visible in older part. No trusses exposed externally.
East front elevation: windows are all 2-light C20 leaded casements. There
are seven on the ground floor and three dormers, one with a gabled roof
and two with raking-top roofs. Main entrance in northernmost bay has a
flat canopy on straight timber brackets and a C20 door. (RCHM, III, p 54,
item 58).
