Description

BROMYARD BROMYARD
HIGH STREET
(West Side)
No 27

Shall be replaced by:-
HIGH STREET
No. 7

12-APR-1973

Shop with flats above. Late C18 with late-C19 shop front.

MATERIALS: Probably stone rubble with stucco to front; parapeted roof; brick left-end stack.

PLAN: The building is double-depth on plan and of three storeys;

EXTERIOR: It has a classically-styled three-window front (north-east) with moulded eaves. There are three six/six pane sashes in recessed surrounds with projecting cills to the first floor; the second floor has three small four/four-pane sashes in plain reveals with projecting cills. The ground floor has a late-C19 double shop front with plate glass windows divided by glazing bars. There are flanking pilaster strips and carved console brackets to either side of the fascia. It has a lobby entrance with a half-glazed central door with single-pane overlight, and a second half-glazed door to the far right.

INTERIOR: Not inspected.

HISTORY: Bromyard is a small market town that was first recorded in circa 840. No. 7 High Street is situated on one of the principal thoroughfares in the town which was known as Novus Vicus in the late C13 and recorded as Newe Streate in 1575. The street appears to have been fully built up by the early C17, though some of the plots have been re-developed since that time.

REASON FOR DESIGNATION: No. 7 High Street is designated at Grade II for the following principal reason:
* Architectural: a well-preserved example of a modest, but pleasant urban building with restrained classical detail
* Intactness: a substantially intact late C18 facade with later shop front which is sympathetic in character to the rest of the building
* Group Value: with many other listed buildings elsewhere in the High Street
