House. Dated 0 (ie 1910) on leadwork separating frist and second storey
right hand bay windows to garden front. By Ernest Newton for Julia Holland.
Arts and Crafts Style. Roughcast, Westmorland slate roofs, end stacks
support diagonally set detached shafts. The symmetrical (garden) front faces
roughly west, cross-wings to north and south of this project further west,
whilst to the north of the north cross-wing is a north-south oriented service
wing. 2 storeys over cellars, main front is of 5 windows A B C B A, the As
corresponding to the cross-wings; metal casements and top-vents (of 6 to 15
panes set in cames) attached to wooden surrounds; the 2 projecting wings each
have 5 sided polygonal bays running through both storeys, the windows at each
level being separated by polygonal lead panels containing garlands of
coloured oak, thistle and shamrock flanked by vertical running oak leaves at
the 4 angles of each polygon. Projecting gables have decorative bargeboards
and pendants. Central entrance under semi-circular plan balustraded porch
supported by 4 Ionic columns and through glazed French casements; entrance
front to east, also has central entrance under a 2 storey central projecting
porch with broken curved pediment supported by paired cushion-shaped corbels
at each side, through a fine beaded oak door. Interior: spine corridor
along front of main range; open well oak staircase to-north of entrance axis
has facetted knobs to newel-tops, distorted but elegant grid-pattern between
hand rails and string and an original light fitting above the well. Room to
south of entrance contains fireplace with signs of the zodiac in the over-
mantel; sitting room in south west projection has tiled marbled mirrored
fireplace and all other fireplaces to principal rooms are complete. The
bathroom has original full-height tiling, water-closet; cast iron bath on
marble slab and heated towel-rail. Service wing: front facing loggia, combined
maids' bathroom and laundry room with Columbian pine fittings, kitchen. Chubb
safe. Skirting boards to main ground floor rooms and windows are painted
softwood whereas paradoxically the ceilings have oak carving. Semi-circular
headed arches to main corridor with dying mouldings to extradoses. The house
contains only 4 principal bedrooms, 2 dressing rooms and 3 servants' bedrooms.
