3/114 The Cob House Farmhouse


Farmhouse. C17 with C19 and C20 alterations and additions. Timber-framed,
painted brick infill, brick replacing walling and refacing, tiled roofs,
double span with central sandstone rubble chimney and 4 diagonal brick shafts
with oversailing cap courses; also brick stack to south side slope. Two
parallel ranges on west/east axis of 2 framed bays each and with lobby entry
to west front elevation. Two storeys and attic. Framing: 4 square panels
from sill to wall-plate; queen strut trusses in gable ends. Front elevation:
C20 casements throughout and wall with plank weatherings; one ground floor
casement in left gable end and bay window in right gable end; above each is
a first floor window and attic light. Central C20 gabled, brick porch,
weatherboarded in gable end, planked door with weathering and side lights.
Interior South range has single, trenched purlins, north range has double,
trenched purlins, both with intermediate queen strut trusses. Wood-mullioned
window incorporated in north range intermediate truss. Main beams are stop-
chamfered. Back-to-back fireplaces. Dog-leg staircase to rear north range
with moulded handrail and turned balusters. Large outshut to north side
elevation. C20 extension link to detached kitchen (qv) at rear.
