3/49 Astley Town


- II

House. Early C17 with later alterations. Timber-framed with some painted
brick and lath and plaster infill, left wing largely underbuilt with coursed
red sandstone, plain brick stack. Central floored hall of 2 bays with
through passage to left of central stack, 2-bay projecting wings. Upper wing
and hall 2 storeys with attic in gable, single storey lower wing with attic
in gable and cellar; irregular mainly later fenestration,2 metal casements
in left gable, one 2-light metal casement in right gable, first floor has
small 4-light window, with one light blocked, and ovolo moulded mullions
below stack; 2-light metal casement and one smaller window to right wing;
ground floor of wings each have 3 casements set in altered framing panels;
hall has two 2-light metal casements to left of entrance; heavy ledge door;
leaded panes throughout. Rear has similar irregular fenestration with ovolo
moulded mullions to window on first floor of hall. Framing: 3 small panels
high to each floor of upper wing, hall is 3 larger panels from sill to wall-
plate, altered framing of lower wing due to stone underbuilding formerly
probably 3 panels from sill to wall-plate; straight diagonal bracing from
sill to central post; left gable has 2 collars with 4 and 2 queen struts
and V-struts above, right gable also has 2 collars with 3 and 2 queen struts
and curved V-struts above. Timber weathering over windows hind sills.
Interior not inspected. Late C18 outbuildings adjoin to right not included.
